Structural Steel

Structural steel commonly is that work defined in AISC” Code of Standard Practice” and or otherwise shown on contract drawings.

The most commonly adopted Structural Steel members used in the building industry are ASTM A36 (Steel Angles and Channels), ASTM A500 (Structural Tubing), ASTM 572 (Plates and Bars), ASTM A992 (W shapes), and ASTM A913 (Rolled Shapes). Bolt and Nuts are commonly ASTM A325 unless noted on plans as ASTM A490. Likewise, Structural Bolts are ASTM A307, ASTM A325 and ASTM A490 are just a few.

Welding Electrodes commonly used are AWS D1.1/ D1.1M for Welding Structural Steel Members and AWS D1.4 for Welding Structural Rebar. Methods of welding we found most effective and have adopted are Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) and Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW). At a bare minimum, all Structural Steel welding is performed in accordance with AWS D1.1 and as such, all company welders are certified to perform. Weld procedures shall be qualified as described in AWS D1.5, Section 5.12 or 5.13 prepared by Zeth Engineering and made available to all welders at all times.

All members are shop primed per AQMD regulations unless otherwise waived by the Owner. Galvanizing is outsourced to specialty contractors.

Erection is performed per tolerances in accordance to AISC “Code” except waived and/ or amended by Client.

Miscellaneous Steel

Miscellaneous Steel materials are usually steel pipe, tubing columns, and framings, miscellaneous channels, angles, bars, expanded wire mesh, corrugated exterior sidings.

Specific items vary significantly depending on use.  A few are Swing/ Rolling Gates, Roof mechanical Screens, Steel Ladders, Pipe Columns, Pipe Handrails, Guard Railings, Embedded Steel Items, Stairs, and other similar structures.

The basic materials used are ASTM A36 (Steel shapes and tubing), ASTM A53 (Steel pipe), and ASTM A307 (Bolts and nuts).

Fabrication, Welding, Priming/ Galvanizing, and erection are similar to Structural Steel specs and codes.

Similarly, all members are shop primed per AQMD regulations. Material subjected to exposed weather is normally Galvanized.

Though erection is likewise performed per AISC tolerances it usually requires more time as it's more labor-intensive.

Ornamental Steel

Ornamental Steel could fall into the category of Miscellaneous Steel. Basic material composition and methods of erection do not have significant variance.

Though Ornamental Steel is more inclined towards the Architectural and/or Physical Properties of the finish product fabrication procedures are usually tedious and finely detailed. This poses quite a challenge to fabricators which requires years of intensive experience.

Nevertheless, Zeth Engineering is equipped to face these tasks and challenges may it be Structural Steel, Miscellaneous Steel, and/ or Ornamentals.
